Leaving LJ - sort of [May. 14th, 2008|09:38 am]

brigidashwood
Okay I am finally committing to using my skwerlgrrl.com account as my blog. I've been meaning to do this for a while. I won't be deleting this account as I need it if I want to comment on my friends pages who are still with LJ. But I have moved all the friends I keep up with on LJ onto my iGoogle homepage as RSS feeds so I can keep up with you all. So if you want to keep up with me....then head on over to skwerlgrrl.com

What finally enabled me to make the move is getting rid of wordpress - which I found confusing - and just redirecting my domain name to blogger (Thanks Renee for the suggestion!)

Hope to see you there.

PS - I haven't unpacked or decorated yet - so be patient with me!

Hello to new reader [info]gynocide!

New journal layout. You like? I like. It is taking a bit of getting used to, but I like.

Medical
I am utterly exhausted. Exhausted to the point of no thinking straight last night, toward the end of Diesel. And I hurt today.

Neurologist appointment today. Don't wanna. Never wanna. I like my neurologist just fine - it's just that I get entirely sick of checkups. Bad enough to go to the doctor for valid reasons. But hauling out there - via multiple buses - to go through the same "Meds still working? Anything new? Okay, see me again in two months" routine is... irksome. Especially since there are multiple doctors involved in this merry-go-round, so I count myself lucky when a week goes by that I don't have to see any of 'em. In my perfect world, we could just have that conversation via e-mail.

Daily Science
Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden report in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that brain cells targeted for early death by continued opiate use may be salvaged by injections of synthetic human growth hormone (HGH). HGH is a chemical naturally secreted by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain that stimulates cell growth and reproduction. The scientists say their findings open the door to new ways to treat and prevent damage from abuse of opiates in addicts as well as patients undergoing chronic pain management.

Hm. One of the leading theories about fibromyalgia is that the micro-muscle-tears that happen day to day don't heal at night for us like they do for other people, because we don't go into Stage 4 sleep and so don't release the HGH that would make said repairs. If HGH could treat the memory issues in "fibro fog" and be a decent muscle therapy...

I can has normal-size hippocampus?

Plans
Doctor visit. Post office and library. Editing and posting Shayara back matter. Critiquing a WisCon manuscript, hopefully (will have time to do that tomorrow morning if I don't get to it today (read: if Elayna brings friends home)).

Will be in a better mood after doctor, I hope. Seeing friends last night was good, and I have a good rest of the week ahead. The checkups just chap my hide, is all.

dentist in brookline? [May. 14th, 2008|10:07 am]

[38andtwelve]
Does anyone have recommendations and a good personal experience with a dentist in brookline? Googling just gives me a slew of names but I don't really want to just close my eyes and pick one and hope they are good. I really just need a check up and maybe a cavity filled, no extreme procedures but I'd still like someone nice and gentle. Thanks!

Well, the music machine is now kaputt and I can't carry a tune in a bucket, so we're gonna have to get super creative here (and be quick about it before that penguin finds that I've gotten loose again) and get a little help from some friends:

OK, I have two WTF moments here. First, I got stuck in mud on Fri. evening. Well half the town knew about it by Mon. morning!!!!!!! (and were talking about it!) Second, this one could also be called a jessica simpson moment. We went for dinner last night. (me and my folks) My Mom orders chicken fried steak, she just LOVES it. (we didn't have this back in NY)  She told me that for the longest time, she thought that it was chicken and still can't figure out why it is called "chicken" fried steak when it is really beef...... doh.......

a lively day [May. 14th, 2008|08:35 am]

There's a lot of shiny stuff under construction.

The chapbook is moving toward completion (and, thanks to TNH, it has a title: Glass Bead Games).

I met with the hotel catering department about the Very Shiny Evening of Readings and Celebration at Fourth Street, and things there are proceeding apace. I'm really excited about that.

Today we get the first batch of fused glass Inner Magpie pendants back, and we find out if they worked or not. (EEEEEEEEE! On tenterhooks!)

And it's not every day that you wake up and find a message saying, "Good morning. Do you know that you've been BoingBoinged?"

Just found out Robert Rauschenberg died.
Right out of high school, I had dreams of becoming an artist. Art with a capital A. I was lucky enough to meet Rauschenberg at the National Gallery around that time, though all I said was something like, "these are really cool" and he nodded. He had a huge influence on me on how textures were layered. When I started making my boxes, yes Joseph Cornell was in my mind, but so was Rauschenberg. Later when I ended up at the VMFA, I remember staring at his goat with ties and being so perplexed, but I kept returning to it.

So anyhow, sad day, but he left behind a whole new way at looking at art and many memories and inspirations.

Hey guys,

if any of you get an e-mail seemingly from me that says I'm waiting for you at "Tagged," it's a lie. I have no idea how it might have infiltrated my contacts list, since I don't remember ever having opened an e-mail from them or even having received one; I don't know if anyone beyond my mom's gotten an e-mail to this effect, but I never signed up for it and haven't spammed you to sign up for it.

I hate these things. Grr.

Prime Minister John Howard - Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.'

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'
'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society .. Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'
'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,
'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, American citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

If you agree please SEND THIS ON.

I found this on 930WFMD Frederick Faith Debate Blog.  I by no means am a christian however I am an American I strongly agree with what the Australian PM has to say - if only America could follow...
