a word to the wise on which Beads of the Month packages are selling out fast [Nov. 7th, 2009|10:44 am]

I've posted here about which are selling fastest, in case you are pondering but would hate to miss a particular month entirely.

We've been taking orders for thirty-three hours now, and three packages are sold out entirely, with a couple more on the two-thirds gone and the half-gone lists. This is the wildest BotMo frenzy ever.

What went wrong in season 3? I need your input [Nov. 7th, 2009|05:41 am]

[yazeed]
With the rumours (or calls) of Ugly Betty's impending demise, we need to go back and analyse what went wrong.  The poor ratings started mid-season 2 and all throughout season three. A huge change in the writing staff and story line contributed to this, but what exactly went wrong in season 3 in your opinion?

Contains spoilers from seasons 1-3. Sure, most of us have already watched it but I want to keep the cut for the newcomers here. )

Renal care foods? [Nov. 7th, 2009|09:51 am]

[Current Mood | worried]

Hello all,
I am posting about my cat Smokey (i used to post about him quite a bit but got those issues under control) about a year ago he was diagnose with i think very early stages of renal failure. the vet prescribed him Hills science diet prescription food, KD. he's been eating the wet and the dry food of that but he doesn't like the wet very much at all. (he does like the dry, but if he eats too much dry food he throws it all up) I took him to the vet about a week ago where his kidneys were tested again, and the vet said his numbers greatly improved! So luckily his kidneys aren't getting worse!! i don't remember the creatinine number but it was actually in the normal range. the vet was very happy with the numbers and told me to continue him on the food.
problem is Smokey at this point won't go near KD :( i was given Iams renal health food to try and the first day smokey ate it and seemed to enjoy it. at this point he won't touch that either. he sniffs the bowl and walks away.
i am at a loss on what to feed this cat. He is also very skinny (6.5 pounds for a fully grown 13 year old cat) and the vet told me he has to eat and really shouldn't lose any more weight. he's more concerned about that then the kidneys at this point.

I think my vet only carries those 2 renal health prescription foods. Does anyone know of any other foods I could try? or at least talk to my vet about? I really want to keep him on this kind of food because his kidney problems got so much better than they were, that I don't want to drastically change anything.

he's the pickiest cat i have ever seen or owned. it is important to mention that he does have an appetite, because he meows at his bowl and when i'm eating he pretty much tries to grab the food out of my hands. he has treats that he likes and goes absolutely wild for them. when i'm desperate i put a little tuna on the KD and he does eat it that way but i can't continue doing that forever.

please help! thank you!

Saturday night [Nov. 7th, 2009|09:39 pm]

It’s a Saturday night, and the husband and I are being terribly exciting.  He’s playing Uncharted on the PS3 and I’m reading some blogs on the MacBook.

Have I mentioned how much I love the MacBook?  Part of this is just being happy to have a light, portable laptop again, but there’s a huge part in just loving the fact that everything just works.   Don’t get me wrong, I am always going to be a PC girl first (and one who doesn’t mind having to fiddle with things to get them to work), but I can see why people join the cult of Mac.

The highlight of today was getting to meet my niece for the first time.  Madeleine was born yesterday by c-section and is utterly adorable.  First niece for my sister and I, first grandchild for my parents.  And in a month’s time (or less!), she will have a cousin :)   Which is suddenly feeling all too soon and yet really far away.

I haven’t written for the last two days.  Neither have I missed writing for the last two days.  Frankly, I’m utterly exhausted and my well of creativity has been wrung dry.  So I’m officially taking a break.

This doesn’t mean that I’m not thinking about writing.  I have been, a lot.  I’ve been reading a bunch of blogs and articles on writing advice (which I shall link to sometime soon) and contemplating process.

My process has always been this: I am a pantser.  I get an idea, and I work with it with no plan, just trying to excavate the relic hidden beneath the earth.  And I rewrite and rewrite and rewrite.

Anyone who’s been reading my blog entries will know by now how frustrated I’ve been with this process.  It doesn’t mesh with my innate nature, which is someone who likes to plan and organise.  And so I think it’s time for me to try something different.  Not now, but when I come back to writing again after the sprog is born and life has settled down again.

I am going to try to become a plotter.

At the moment, I’m unsure as to what method of plotting I’ll use.  I have plenty of time to explore them, so that doesn’t worry me right now.  I’m also going to try to get myself back into a writing routine as soon as I can.  This may be the more ambitious part of the plan, but it’s always been the best way for me.  I’m also going to seriously track the time that I spend writing and set myself deadlines.  And yes, I will probably blog endlessly about this entire process.

Something I've come to learn about myself is that I love to take notes. I have post-it notes all over the place, tons of notebooks, a chalkboard and monthly calenders (one workout and one food tracker). I just started doing the calendars, so there's not much on them yet! I'm not a visual learner at all. In school I had to take excellent notes or I didn't do well, and that has carried over into my adult life. Once I've done something enough, it sticks with me forever, but until then...not so much. So, today, hopefully, I will learn how to burn dvd's and upload pictures from the camera. Notes will be taken. My current motto is 'I'm going to need a bigger book'.

Noah, who is usually a very sweet kitty, is being a real pain in the ass this morning. He wants my coffee! It's been a struggle to keep him away. When I move the cup from his reach, he, in a fit of protest, jumps up on the end table and bites the lampshade.

We now have Guitar Hero 5 and Guitar Hero Metallica. I dunno if it's actually called GH Metallica or just Metallica, but I can't be bothered to look it up. Haven't played them yet, but we will soon.

You know what? I have decided that Thanksgiving will be my new favorite holiday. Why? TWO DAYS OFF FROM WORK. Right now, those words are like a warm soft blanket on a chilly winters day.

Day off [Nov. 7th, 2009|07:55 am]

[Current Location |l'appartement]
[Current Mood |contemplative]

Today is a day off from which I will attempt to squeeze every ounce of DFQ. Up late-ish. Nice breakfast. Will go down to a craft fair at the local church (it's supposed to be very good and Christmas is coming). Then the gym. Then MA. I look forward to seeing [info]countessinn today and giggling. I also look forward to being at my apartment tomorrow for the whole day. What shall I do? Sew? Spin? Cook? All three?

I really want to make a new bag for everyday things. No, it's not a purse, I am not a purse kind of person. It's just a bag. I will have to make it the right shape to accomodate that camera (if I buy it). I also want to make a cover for my hot water bottle - the towel just isn't quite the thing. And I want to make shopping bags out of the beautiful fabric I got at Valley Fabrics and have been hoarding - the pieces are generally only 1/2 a yard or so, which really isn't large enough for a quilt. The colors are all over the place and nothing coordinates. I want to make myself a new quilt. There's a blouse that I've cut the mock up out for that I'd like to sew up. I have that fleece that needs washing and spinning. I have the other beautiful red wool that needs spinning. Want to finish the peacock fiber. Then knit the cowl out of it. *sigh* This list could go on for pages.

The company Christmas party is coming up. I'm still not sure I'll go (damn RSVP thingy has a 'guest' option on it, which depresses me to no end). The theme this year is that it's a masked ball (they're calling it a 'masque' and I didn't have the heart to tell them this was not what they meant). I could make a dress for this, but am not sure I have enough time. Plus, I really don't like parties anyway, so. But the party is a huge deal. Very lavish. Hmm.

This morning is all frosty out. The grass is completely white, which caused me to think for a moment that it had snowed. It was beautiful as the sun was just peeking over the hill across the way - made the frost all glittery.

[Current Mood | cold]

Drywall Day has arrived. I don't expect people to start showing up for another three hours or so, which gives me some time to get out to the grocery store, get the dishes done and accomplish a couple of things that still need to be done -- like throwing all the stuff that needs to be out of the way in the bedroom onto the bed. While I have a bunch of muscular fellows here, I'm thinking I'll have them wrestle the piano across the room, because I've wanted it away from the door for ages. Mom claims that she always moved that piano¹ by herself, but I'm skeptical. I'll also get them to move that cast iron sink into the attic of the garage (I'm keeping it just in case I ever do decide to completely remodel the downstairs).

The Vitke called and said that he unearthed the tub he and his lady wife are giving me and it's sitting in the backyard. I may get some of the muscular fellows to go and get it for me and store it in the garage. The garage is already getting filled up again, and I probably won't be parking a van in it over the winter.

Friend P took a look at the Great Plywood Desk of Doom and said that one good twist (again, by someone stronger than me) will wrench that top right off of it, and it'll be easy to get out of there. He also took a look at my drill/driver and I'm doing everything right, but apparently not tightening it enough. If I don't have the hand strength to tighten the chuck sufficiently, then the thing is useless to me and will be going back, and I'll get the little housewife model instead.

The beer is bought. I got what I assume is the Good Stuff, given people's reactions to it: Guinness and Sam Adams Octoberfest. I also got a small thing of instant coffee² (the cutest little jar ever). The cookies are made, and the pies will get made later. Must remember to grab some vanilla ice cream when I go out to the grocery store -- and some cash for paying for pizza later. I got garbage bags and I have plenty of rags. I'm sure I can find sacrificial sheets if need be.

The only thing we might need is mud³, and we'll determine that and make a Home Despot run later, if necessary.

I am also going to need to find a stack of CDs that won't be too objectionable to everyone. Though it might be amusing to stuff Menolly into her dock and put her on shuffle, given that there's Barry Manilow4, Christmas music, opera, soundtracks, folk, Irish stuff, some light rock, '80s stuff, etc. on there.

The sun was starting to stain the southeastern sky mauve when I last looked out, so it's time to get moving.
---
¹ This is my childhood piano; it was given to me as a birthday gift the year we moved into this house. It was brought in and left by the door through which it was brought. It was never meant to stay there. In this household, we don't know the meaning of the word "temporary."

² Which led to a discussion between Friend P and me about how we hate WalMart because they tell you what you want/need. If it's not carried at WalMart (like my deodorant), then you don't want and/or need it. This came up because I mentioned that there was all kinds of coffee for coffee machines, but only a few jars of instant.

³ There's some in the basement, but it might be dead.

4 When I told him that I had put my sole Barry Manilow CD on the iPod, he jokingly told me -- in front of friends -- that he wanted a divorce. Since that was only about six weeks before he said those same words seriously, I don't find it very funny. And I don't listen to Barry Manilow much anymore, either.

Wee hour thoughts! [Nov. 7th, 2009|01:30 am]

[plumhoney]
Hello! These days and nights of mine have been full of musings, thoughts, self-reflections, wise words from cherished ones, and music. No matter what is happening in my life, there is always music attached as if it were tangible! There is a specific song that is haunting me tonight, and has appeared from time to time in the last weeks, in and out. Moments call for certain songs. I can't explain it, but I'm sure a few of you would understand.

Now the dark air is like fire on my skin and even the moonlight is blindin.'  )
